Hyperthermia is a tumour therapy in which the body’s core temperature is artificially elevated. It is often utilized together with an appropriate chemotherapy as the increase in blood flow in tumour tissue results in better uptake of the chemotherapy. Due to the increased uptake and higher metabolic activity of the cells, the effectiveness of the chemotherapy within the tumour cells is improved.
The effects of artificial body warming are also used to stimulate the immune system, enabling hyperthermia to be used in the treatment of non-malignant diseases.
